How Do Pregnancy Tests Work?
Pregnancy tests are pretty simple and painless. A pregnancy test detects whether you’re pregnant by checking for a pregnancy hormone in your blood or urine. This pregnancy hormone is called HCG – Human Chorionic Gonadotropin. HCG is made in a woman’s placenta after a fertilized egg implants in the uterus and is made only during pregnancy.
A lab-quality pregnancy test is done through a health care provider or pregnancy center like ours to confirm pregnancy, where a urine test is taken. Some health care providers detect pregnancy through a blood test, normally done super early in pregnancy.
When Should I Take a Test?
The best time to take a pregnancy test is at least one week after your missed period. The HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) pregnancy hormone is best detected at least this far after your missed period. When used the right way, home pregnancy tests are 97–99 percent accurate.
