What Are My Options If I'm Facing an Unplanned Pregnancy?

Knowing what option is right for you as you navigate your unplanned pregnancy can seem confusing. You are not alone.

We’re here to help you better understand all three of your pregnancy o ptions: abortion, adoption, and parenting. Talk safely and confidentially at The Pregnancy Resource Center today.

You Have Three Options

Get the facts to know what pregnancy option is right for you and your unique pregnancy. Below is a brief introduction to each option.

1. Abortion

There are two main types of abortion procedures done at different points of pregnancy: medical abortion (the abortion pill) and surgical abortion. Medical abortion uses two drugs, mifepristone and misoprostol, to terminate an existing pregnancy. Risks to medical abortion include:

  • The body not releasing all pregnancy tissue in the uterus (incomplete abortion). This may require surgical abortion.
  • An ongoing pregnancy if the procedure doesn’t work
  • Heavy and prolonged bleeding
  • Infection
  • Fever
  • Digestive symptoms such as upset stomach

Surgical abortion consists of dilation of the uterus and a suction tube to remove the pregnancy from the uterus. Risks of surgical abortion include:

  • Damage to the womb or cervix
  • Uterine perforation (accidentally putting a hole in the uterus with one of the instruments used)
  • Infection of the uterus or fallopian tubes
  • Scarring of the inside of the uterus

To determine what abortion options are available to you, you will want to know how far along you are with an ultrasound. Confirm your pregnancy details with a free lab-quality pregnancy test and limited obstetrical ultrasound at our center today.

2. Adoption

Adoption is the legal process that gives an adoptive family the permanent rights and responsibilities of raising a child who is not their biological child. As the birth mother, you have the option of selecting the family who will raise your child and the amount of communication you hope to have with them.

  • Open Adoption: this adoption includes open communication with the adoptive family and possibly exchanging names, addresses, and phone numbers. Both parties agree to build the type of relationship they want.
  • Closed Adoption: closed adoption is the most private option, where the adoptive family and birth mom remain anonymous. The courts seal the child’s birth certificate and identifying information after the adoption is finalized.
  • Semi-open Adoption: with a semi-open adoption, a third party, like an adoption agency or adoption specialist you’ve chosen, handles all communication between you and your child and the adoptive family.

At The Pregnancy Resource Center, we offer a network of credible and professional adoption agencies in the area to which we can refer you.

3. Parenting

You may be considering parenting, but you want more information about the available parenting resources and support. There are many free community resources to consider.

If you’re a student, online schooling could make parenting more manageable for you. Many schools are welcoming the idea of women raising children and pursuing their education.
